I believe that there will be huge challenges facing the RCN and nursing over the next few years as health spending is squeezed and we see pressure from the government to cap nurses’ pay, re-examine pension schemes and cut nursing posts. Whether you work in the NHS, in education or the independent sector, these changes will impact on all of us and we need a strong campaigning RCN to resist this pressure.
Having been a branch activist, a steward and a forum activist since 1990, I think the RCN is at it strongest when these 3 cornerstones of the RCN work together. As a member of the Regional Board since its creation, I have helped make the branches in the North West stronger and better resourced and I have also campaigned for many years as a Forum Chair to make forums stronger.
With your support, I want to build on the work that we have done so far in the North West and increase membership involvement in branch and forums throughout the region as well as increasing the number of workplace representatives. I think there is a real opportunity to use web-based resources and email newsletters to keep you up-to-date on what is happening locally, regionally and nationally and allow you to influence what the RCN is doing on your behalf.
I have been an RCN activist in the North West for the last 25 years as:
- Steward
- Branch secretary
- Forum chair
- Regional board member
- Agenda committee member
- Elected forum representative on the PMS Action Group
- National Forum Co-ordinating Committee member
During all that time, I have tried to make sure that every group and committee that I have served on has been member-led and has tried to involve as many members as possible in its decisions.
My passion is developing the potential within every nurse and this led to me to my current roles as a Director of Community Health Innovation in Manchester and Visiting Lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University, Bucks New University and Goldsmiths University of London. My career spanned both hospital and community care in the NHS and the independent sector. I am currently an RCN North West Board Member and Chair the North West Independent Sector Network.
